South African Bobotie

A traditional South African dish consisting of spiced beef with a savory egg topping. (recipe below)

Ingredients (serves 8)

  • 1 white onion

  • 3 TSP Olive Oil

  • 10 TSP Butter

  • 2LB ground beef

  • 3 oz toasted almonds

  • 1 ⅓ oz mango chutney

  • 3 cloves of garlic

  • 1.5 tsp tumeric

  • 3 tsp cumin

  • 3 tsp corriander

  • 1.5 tsp allspice

  • 1 tsp ground pepper

  • 2 tsp dried mixed herbs, OR as substitute - 1 part dried thyme, 1 part dried oregano, 1 part dried parsley, 1 part dried

  • marjoram, 1 part dried basil, 1 part dried sage

  • 10 bay leaves

  • 4 eggs

  • 9 oz milk

  • 2 slices stale bread

  • Yellow saffron rice

  • 2 Tsp Salt

  • Sour cream and mango chutney for toping

Steps

  1. Chop or puree Onion and fry in the olive oil and butter until lightly colored

  2. Add ground beef and cook for 2 minutes

  3. Empty the minced onion and beef into a colander AND collect the juice from it

  4. Soak the bread in the juice from the onion and beef and break into small pieces

  5. Mix the beef, soaked bread, onion, almonds, chutney, garlic, and all the spices and seasonings

  6. Spoon the mixture into an overproof dish

  7. Place the bay leaves throughout the mixture

  8. Combine the eggs and milk and pour over the mixture

  9. Cook at 400F for 30 minutes or more as needed

  10. Serve with yellow saffron rice and mango chutney, and sour cream (if desired)
