Navigating Home Ownership – Part 5, Final Logistics

Once settled on your home, you will want to take care of changing your address and updating billing.

Suggested Billing Changes

  1. Old mortgage company – They should refund you your escrow account and any unused interest.
  2. Utilities – Turn off auto-payment and set end date and coordinate with new utilities.
  3. HOA – Turn off auto-payment for HOA fees and coordinate with new HOA.
  4. County taxes – Make final payment for property taxes on cars/house if needed.
  5. Home Owners Insurance – Contact them to cancel your policy if using another company.
  6. Cable/Internet/Phone – Contact them to stop or transfer service to new address.

Suggested Address Changes

  1. USPS – They will forward your mail for up to a year. This is the first change you should make
  2. All Banks, credit cards, payment processing services
  3. Social Security
  4. DMV
  5. IRS – You can wait until you file a tax return and then update at that time.
  6. Health Insurance
  7. Doctors
  8. Voter Registration
  9. Organizations you belong to or support (churches, gym, non-profits, etc)
  10. Magazine subscriptions
  11. Family members
